Brainwaves and Sleep

Depending on its particular function of the moment, the brain emits different types of waves. Among these: Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta. The two that we are most concerned with in therapy are Theta and Delta.

Theta waves are emitted during meditation, relaxation, and hypnosis. Delta waves are emitted during sleep.

There is a technique we can use for controlling the brain's waves. Since we know the brain creates and emits delta waves during sleep, we can create delta waves outside of the brain--through music, sound files, etc.--and cause that wave to be created within the brain through listening to the external source.

This technique is known as Brainwave Entrainment. It is very simple. For example, by inserting the desired wave into music and listening to it, we cause the brain's waves to synch with the external wave and actually begin emitting that wave.

How that looks in practice might be like this: Say you can't sleep. Your mind is restless, your brain simply won't shut down. It may be currently in the wave-state of Alpha or Gamma. You put on headphones and listen to music packed with Delta Waves. Very soon, the waves in your brain synchronize with the Delta waves in the music, and your brain begins generating its own Delta waves. The result: sleep! Your brain is now in Delta.

TV and radio ads are very often packed with Theta waves. Remember from above, Theta waves are associated with relaxation, meditation, and HYPNOSIS. You wonder why you see the ad and want the burger? The ad put out Theta waves to cause your brain to synchronize and create its own, thus becoming open to the suggestions of the ad.

To help you with sleep and other concerns, we have created a youtube channel with audio/visual clips to help you sleep and meditate. Our sleep clips have Delta waves, our meditation clips have Theta waves. You can find it here at therapyinyoursleep. We add additional clips on a regular basis. Feel free to listen. Use headphones or earbuds for best results.
